Koffi Olomide has been a star since he first burst onto the Congolese music scene. Starting out in Papa Wemba’s band, Viva La Musica, Koffi became renowned for his song writing capabilities and he collaborating frequently with Wemba before moving on as a solo act and bandleader. In 1983, he recorded Ngouda, his first of over 24 studio albums and several additional live releases. His music was dubbed Tcha Tcho, a variant of soukous, the popular dance music from Congo-Kinshasa that evolved from Afro-Cuban rhumba and combined his deep baritone and falsetto romantic crooning with highly rhythmic and lush musical soundscapes accentuated with keyboards. Over time, Olomide’s band, Quartier Latin, evolved further to perform many number one Congolese Rumba hits with scorching guitar, drum and bass sebenes accompanied by choral call and response arrangements, often times featuring 6-8 male backing vocalists.

Several music stars, including Fally Ipupa, were launched into stardom out of Olomide’s Quartier Latin band. Olomide began touring internationally with his band Quartier Latin throughout Africa, Europe, America and even Dar Es Salam. His career spans over 4 decades, more recently his collaborations include rising artists Gaz Fabilouss, Gally Garvey and Innoss’B. These appearaces foreshadow the music on “Legende” his long awaited three disc set, featuring several special collaborations which is expected to launch November 25th.

Opening for Koffi at Webster Hall will be the Nkumu Katalay performing his blend of “RumbianFunk.” Nkumu is familiar to New York City audiences, his music spans the range of his life’s experience, starting with his Congolese roots and compressing African American spirituals, Afro Cuban, and 70s funk into the mix.

Koffi, Nkumu says, is a mind-blowing lyricist who, along with Papa Wemba is an artist he takes inspiration from. “As a kid trying his best to represent his culture to be next to the legend, I dream of these moments, playing in the shadow of the greats teaches me to e humble.”

Nkumu is currently recording his first album “The Paradox”. My Life is full of paradox he told us, a theme he explores on “Clear My Path” from the album. That said, Nkumu sees himself coming full circle with this show and leaving the next morning for Abidjan to perform at the RDV Jazz event the following weekend.
