globalFEST at Lincoln Center showcased 10 bands on 3 stages. Performing were Zar Electrik (Morocco/France), Maruja Limón (Spain), Bamba Wassoulou Groove (Mali), Hazmat Modine (U.S.), Mireya Ramos and the Poor Choices (U.S.), Ghazi & Boom.Diwan x Arturo O’Farrill (U.S./U.A.E.), Akshara Music Ensemble (India/U.S.), Paul Beaubrun (Haiti/U.S.), Rebolu (Colombia/U.S.), and Elida Almeida (Cape Verde/Portugal). Music festivals in North America have spaced themselves in a way that makes it possible for international artists to perform here by going from festival to festival and filling in with dates that makes it possible financially to undertake a tour. This attracts a wide range of artists to New York City on a cold winter weekend in January to showcase for presenters and interested members of the public.

Mireya Ramos and the Poor Choices at globalFEST, Lincoln Center, January 12th, 2025

Mireya Ramos linked up rancheras and country music with Kansas City based The Poor Choices, a honky tonk band. It’s a collaboration with years of history and led to “Sin Fronteras” their first album together in 2023.

Locally based Rebolu, brought the Afro-Caribbean sounds of Colombia to the stage. Leader Ronoald Polo was born in Baranquilla and moved to the city in 2001. The foundation of Ronald writes connects with Caribbean and African cultures. Music inspired by Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto and the rhythms found back home from the Magdalena region, uptempo, funky and meant to make you dance. Central to the music is the rhythms pounded out by Moris Cañate, Johanna Castenada traded vocals with Ronald, and featured Erica "Kika" Parra on the drum kit

Bamba Wassoulou Groove (Mali) performing at globalFEST, Lincoln Center, January 12th, 2025

Bamba Wassoulou Groove, veteran musicians Moussa Diabaté, guitar; Bayni Diabaté, guitar; Maguett Diop, drums; Aboubacar 'Papis' Diombana, bass; formed in 2013 to honor the late Zani Diabate and carry the energy, in their music, of the era of the Super Djata band and The Rail Band of Bamako. The musicians are veterans of those pioneering bands, blending Malian rhythms with a hard electric sound. Led by vocalist Ousmane Diakité, they brought that energy to Lincoln Center in a scintillating set.

Zar Electrik, is a trio from Marseilles, It includes Anass Zine on oud, gumbri, percussion, and vocals; Arthur Pineau on kora, percussion and vocals; and Didier Simione, vocals, synth, and electronics. It’s entrancing spontaneous North African dance music filtered through electronica. The band released the 6 song album “Hawa” on the Jarring Effects label in 2023

Ghazi, Boom,Diwan, and O’Farrill performing at globalFEST, January 12th, 2025 at Lincoln Center

Ghazi Faisal Al-Mulaifi founded Boom.Diwan, with traditional Kuwaiti musicians and blend Kuwaiti bahri (sea) music with global jazz traditions. They were joined by acclaimed Latin jazz master Arturo O’Farrill. The recently released “Live in the Khaleej” documents the collaboration.

Elida Almeida is from the Cape Verdean island of Santiago. Elida Almeida's set sung in Kriolu, featured original songs that touched on several traditional rhythms found in the islands, funana, batuka, coladeira, morna as well as latin jazz. Maruja Limón at globalFEST, Lincoln Center, January y12th, 2025

Maruja Limón is an energetic female pop band from Barcelona whose music uses spanish tradition music, flamenco as a foundation, calling it flamenco fusion. Thee quintet from Barcelona, ​​presented music from their third album: “Vidas”.
